Meaningless of Life without God

Now before I start this article it is not to say that atheists can’t have their own subjective purposes with their own lives. This article is to show that without God all meaning, value, and purpose ultimately become subjective making life without value. Now what do I mean by meaning value and purpose?

Meaning has to do with significance why something matters at all.
Value has to do with good and evil, right and wrong.
Purpose has to do with goals or a reason for something.

No Ultimate Meaning
Without God humans have no significance because the Greatest possible being would not find any meaning in creation of Humans that he made in his image if he didn’t exist. On Atheism nobody or anything can show why anything has any meaning at all. It’s one opinion verses another on what has meaning and what doesn’t. There’ no ultimate meaning to life if there is no God. Why does our existence matter at all? It doesn’t on atheism because it shows that we ae just the result of time+matter from a cosmic accident. Are puny lives have just existed on this planet of dust for only a small about of time compared to the whole time of the cosmos. Why would the Universe have any meaning either if it is also just the result of a cosmic accident as well? As Lawrence Krauss once said: The universe doesn’t give a damn about us! What we do has no objective meaning because we are doomed to death in a short period of time. Of course what you do has your own subjective meaning in your life, but so did Hitler, Stalin, and everyone one else who is evil as well. Now immortality would also have to have meaning or otherwise that doesn’t matter all. For example, imagine you are in a box that is 9 by 10 feet and he can’t die in this box. Once you go in there you, can never come out. That would suck to have to live in there without anything but an empty space. If God exists and gives value plus immortality, then there really would be ultimate meaning in every human beings life because life would not end at the Grave.

No Ultimate Value
Without God there’s no ultimate value of whether something is Good/Bad and Wrong/Right. It doesn’t matter if we lived as Mother Teresa or Stalin. Fyodor Dostoyevsky: If there is no God then all things are permitted. If life ends at the grave and there is no ultimate justice, then everything is permitted. What we do now will not matter because we will die just like everything that has come before. If you can get away with it in this life, then you will get away with it forever. Of course I’m not saying that you should do things that Stalin and Hitler did, but without God that’s just my opinion. There’s no ultimate justice to decide what’s right and wrong to do which leads to subjective morality. I’m going to address morality just a little because I will do a video on The Moral Argument in a future video. Morality would be subjective because there’s no ultimate way we ought to live. It becomes subjective and relative which a lot of Atheists will admit. It would be Stalin vs Mother Teresa opinions on what’s right and wrong. Richard Dawkins gives his opinion on this by stating we are machines for propagating DNA, Morality is arbitrary likes how we evolved five fingers, and his famous quote of there being no ultimate meaning, purpose, and life without a designer or God. The first quote that we are only machines for propagating DNA makes me not want to propagate DNA. If we evolved morality just like our finger’s then we evolved reason, everything that you care about, all information is without foundation, and so on. It’s self-defeating because we can’t know anything if unguided evolution determines everything because we our only based on are DNA coding. We don’t have freewill and so on. There can be no ultimate value because evolution can’t decide what has ultimate value like the greatest possible being who is God. On this view it is impossible to condemn war oppression, or crime as evil because there is no objective good or evil outside of human opinion. Without God we determine what is right and wrong and history proves humans can’t determine any objectivity on morality, justice, or value.

No Ultimate Purpose
Without out God then there’s no ultimate purpose for life: No Ultimate Goal. The universe is doomed to death because it’s expansion will eventually be the end of it and will become a cold grave for everything it contains. Humans will be doomed eventually like every other species on this planet that has come to pass. Everything was from an accident that has no goal in mind, but except for our death’s. Randomness can have an ultimate goal, so without God humans will have to determine their own purposes. Of course through human history we can show that this cannot make any ultimate purpose at all. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase live life to the fullest. We will assume right now that Atheism could somehow give us free will to be able to make decisions in our lives to make this phrase even possible. Each individual interprets this phrase one may think of this as to help as many people as possible before they die and another may say let me see how many people can I kill before my life ends. Humanism fails when it comes to objective concepts such as objective morality and purpose because humans can barely agree on anything.  Without God we have no ultimate purpose and can only live in our subjective illusions. Our objective goal becomes Death on the Naturalistic, Atheistic, Materialistic worldview.

Now of course none of this means there is a God, but if we want to live with objectivity then we should live as if there is God, which Pascal would wager. I would say that Christianity is the most plausible out of all the other religions, but that’s for a different video. Bertrand Russel himself said he lived in illusion because he wanted a way to condemn war, but he couldn’t on his worldview. Atheists cannot justify their happiness intellectually only in an emotional, subjective illusion. Biblical Christianity offers a solid foundation for objectivity in our lives though and I think it is the one worldview we should all live in. We have Ultimate value because we out made in God’s image who is the greatest possible being who is omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, and so on. We have ultimate value because he is the morally perfect being who determines right from wrong and what’s bad and good. We have an ultimate purpose to come to know God through his son Jesus of Nazareth that we may have eternal relationship with the greatest possible being. Why would a being like this care about specks of dust like everyone and I? Is it possible because God is also the most loving being too? With Biblical Christianity we can live an Objective life. If you want this objectivity in your life, then I encourage you to become a Christian.

The Kalam Cosmological Argument  Part 1

This argument is one of the first arguments for God’s existence. It was constructed by Muslim Theologians to eliminate an eternal Universe. “The Universe was, is and always will be”- Carl Sagan. It this statement true? If this argument is successful in its premises than the conclusion logically follows to be true. It’s a syllogism that is a deductive argument, so it’s impossible for the conclusion to be false. It has 2 premises and a conclusion to the argument.

Premise #1: Everything that begins to exist has a cause.
Premise #2: The Universe began to exist.
Premise #3: Therefore, the Universe has a cause.

Premise one you would think would be uncontroversial. Many challenge this premise in many forms. I will deal with objections in part 2 of this argument. Now this asserts that anything that comes into being like a new person is born would have a cause. The cause would be the person’s parent because we do not being born without parents. A new building made would be caused by engineer’s, construction workers, and so on. Since things that come to be have a cause, it’s more plausibly true than false that premise 1 is true.

Premise two seems to be the less controversial of the two premises which is strange. The beginning of the universe is scientific fact based on the based the scientific theory which is the Big Bang Theory. “Almost everyone now believes that the universe, and time itself, had a beginning at the Big Bang”-Stephen Hawking.    “With the proof now in place, cosmologists can no longer hide behind the possibility of a past-eternal universe.  There is now no escape, they have to face the problem of a cosmic beginning”- Alexander Vilenkin. “…astronomical evidence leads to a biblical view of the origin of the world…. the essential element in the astronomical and biblical accounts of Genesis is the same.” (Jastrow, God and the Astronomers, 14.) “The best data we have (concerning the Big Bang) are exactly what I would have predicted had I had nothing to go on but the five books of Moses, the Psalms and the Bible as a whole”- Arno Penzias. “Certainly there was something that set it all off.... I can’t think of a better theory of the origin of the universe to match Genesis”- Robert Wilson. “There is no doubt that a parallel exists between the big bang as an event and the Christian notion of creation from nothing”- George Smoot. These men are all respected men in their fields of physics and are not “creationist”. I mean people who think the universe was created 6,000 to 10,000 years ago. Now what’s the actually evidence for the beginning of the universe.

The second law of thermodynamics is the first piece of evidence which states” that the total entropy can only increase over time for an isolated system, meaning a system which neither energy nor matter can enter or leave”. Meaning if the universe were eternal we would always have been in the universe’s heat death. All energy would be used and unusable. We still have usable energy which I would assume so since I’m still alive and using energy. The universe is a closed system, so there’s nowhere for our energy to go. The second piece of evidence is the expansion of the universe discovered by Edwin Hubble in 1929. This shows that the universe is finite in the past and is still getting bigger like a balloon. If it were to reverse than time itself would change and the universe would collapse on itself and never expand again. We can trace the points between space, time, and matter which eventually reach zero showing creation out of nothing. The Borde-Guth-Vilenkin theorem help shows that any universe expanding is finite in the past. The third piece of scientific evidence is the radiation afterglow which shows the remains of the massive expansion of Big Bang. This helps showing that matter, time, and space coming into being out of nothing and shows that the universe was created 13.7-14.5 billion years. This was discovered by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in 1965. This helps showing the first step of the universes formation as we have it today. The fourth piece of scientific evidence for the Big Bang are the great galaxies seeds. These show ripple effects in temperature which was predicated by the radiation afterglow help confirming the truth of Big Bang Cosmology. These were also necessary for galaxies to form hence the name great galaxy seeds. The fifth piece of scientific evidence would be Einstein theory of Generally relativity. It shows that space, time and matter are co-relative and are contingent upon each other for their existence. Also, shows that light is a constant even in a vacuum which helps show the age of stars and to help show the finite age of the past. These are five pieces of scientific evidences for the beginning of the universe.

There are two more pieces of evidences for the case of the beginning of the Universe. They are both philosophical arguments for the beginning of the universe. Not as strong as the scientific, but still good reinforces. The first one is if the universe were eternal there would not be a past or present. We are in the present now and change is still happening like universe expanding, changing of planets, second law of thermodynamics, and so on. A past eternal universe is contradictory because eternal is without past, present, or future. Eternal is rather timeless or changeless. The second philosophical argument is that we cannot have an infinite number of events in the real world. Take Herbert’s Hotel which shows the ridiculousness of an actually infinite number of events. It’s a hotel that has an infinite number of rooms, but also has infinite number of people in these rooms. Try and reconcile this, but wait it gets even more obscured. An infinite number of people want to check, so the clerk says don’t worry we have infinite amount of rooms. The clerk moves guess 1 in room 1 to room 2 and so. He keeps moving one guess to the next room and continues these process because there’s an infinite amount of rooms. The hotel should put a sign on front door saying all rooms are vacant, but we have plenty of rooms. With an actually infinite number of events we get contradictions and it’s because how well we understand infinity from a mathematical perspective. These are the two main philosophical arguments Theologians have used before the scientific evidence.

Since both of these premises are more plausible than true we have a sound argument and also the argument is also valid because given that the premises truth it’s impossible for the conclusion to be false. The conclusion logically follows from the truth of the premises and the conclusion is that the universe has a cause. Now the next question is: What is this cause? Well this cause would have to transcend space, time, and matter. Transcends means to be beyond and not contingent upon space, time, and matter. More as space, time, and matter being contingent upon the cause which would have to be spaceless, timeless, and immaterial. It would have to be an intelligent cause because it sets the right parameters for the fine-tuning of the universe for the initial conditions (expansion rate, etc.) Also for the temporal effect of the universe would have to be cause from a personal agent. For the universe with a temporal effect requires a persona agent to choose to bring a state of affairs into existence. The cause for the universe would have to be omnipotent to create the Universe. With all these qualities in place for the cause we have theistic God as a cause. This is part 1 of the Kalam Cosmological Argument, and Part 2 will deal with objections to this argument.

Can Truth be Known?

9/11/2017

-John Dunfee

Picture
Truth is whatever correspond with what is reality. Truth just is and doesn’t need an explanation. Truth exist necessarily and is an abstract concept of what reality is. This is why this question seems nonsensical to me. The question (what is the Truth?) is completely a respectable question because it’s asking what is reality. Whether Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Atheism, or any other worldview could be true. Whichever view is true would be truth or what is reality. Truth is whatever reality is. Reality exists because something is and something is not. Whether I’m part of a dream or a brain in a jar being stimulated these are two candidates could be what is reality. Of course I’m sure that I’m having an experience independent of either of these ideas of reality.

Truth can be known by humans because we are wondering creatures seeking the truth. Animals do not have this ability all they do is try to survive. Humans wonder and survive. Some even contemplate if they should even live based on what they think reality is. This is why truth is so important for humans to discover. We as a wondering species should try and figure out what reality is because it ultimately affects us. If Hell is real, then we should care about truth and if the Christian God is real then we can have the ultimate relationship with the greatest conceivable being in ultimate paradise. If atheism is true, then that makes this life count in whatever way you want to live it. Whether you live like Mother Teresa or live like Adolf Hitler. It’s up to you because it’s just my opinion vs your opinion.

We live in a post-truth age is how some post-modernist are putting it. They value emotion over what is truth. First off, why should we value emotions over truth because that itself would be a truth statement! I do value emotions because I use emotions to express why truth is important. I believe that’s a key purpose of emotion is to emphasize the value of truth claims. If you get offended by what is true, then obviously you have a certain opinion of certain concepts of truth. Like Christianity for example, many people don’t want to be true because there’s a standard they have to follow. People want to be their own God’s and rule their own lives. This is subjective morality where everyone lives their own ways. The problem is we have people who want to help people and people who want to kill people. What we need is an objective standard beyond human opinion which would be the objective way to live. If we all followed Jesus two greatest commandments love God and our neighbors, then we would have zero conflict with other people.

This is why truth is important because it determines what reality is and how we should live in what reality truly is. We can combat statements that try to attack the objectivity of truth. It’s called the road runner tactic. It’s where we apply a truth claim to itself. Here are some great examples of self-defeating statements:

There is no truth!
Is that True?

We shouldn’t judge others!
You just made a judgement of others right there.

The scientific method is the only way to know truth.
Did you use science to determine the truth of this truth claim?
Also the fact that there are many things that cannot be accessed by the scientific method.

I don’t speak a word in English.
You just spoke English!

Christians are bigots!
You’re a bigot when it comes to Christian opinions.

True for you, but not for me!
Okay then I shouldn’t care about the fact that it’s true for you.

These are many claims about truth that are defeated by the claim itself. If you hold the position that truth cannot be known the you do believe that truth can be known because you’ve comes to the truth that truth cannot be known. It’s a self-defeating worldview and many people don’t take it seriously. I highly suggest becoming a sincere seeker of truth. I think if you search with an open mind and open heart then I think you will come to realize that Christianity is the ultimately Truth.

Are all Religions the Same?

9/6/2017

-John Dunfee

Picture
In this new postmodern era we here a common phrase of all religions are the same or they all generally have the same doctrines. This is such a mistake in reasoning and shows the intelligence of people in the postmodern era of their knowledge of religions and philosophy.

There’s a major logically fallacy to this belief and it is the fact that it breaks the law of non-contradiction which states the two things the contradict each oher can’t both be true. For example, you can’t have a married bachelor because that’s a logical absurdity. Another simple example would be 2+2=4 or 2+2=5 would be contradictory statements and both can’t be true. Either 2+2=4 is correct, 2+2=5 is correct, or their both wrong. Obviously 2+2=4 would be the correct statement and just ask any postmodernists if 2+2=4 is a fact and if they do then they contradict their own beliefs. I will save postmodernism for another video and article for another time.

The law of non-contradiction applies to religions as well. Either there all wrong or one is correct if they contradict. I would figure most Atheists would agree with theists on this point, but of course they would say that all religions are inaccurate. Let’s go through same basic beliefs that are taught in most of the major religions and see if they contradict.

First off, there are three monotheistic religions and 2 pantheist religions which already answers the questions by showing that 3 agree on one view of God, but they disagree on the characteristics of God which means they already contradict. This is already a big difference and shows that with basic research you can disprove the claim with a couple of sentences. Let’s go through the monotheistic religions first to show how they contradict.

Christianity teaches that Jesus he is the only way, the truth, and the life. While Islam teaches that those who believe in Jesus as the savior our condemned for not believing that Prophet Muhammad has delivered the final message for salvation which is excluded from belief in Jesus. Christianity teaches that Christ was Crucified while Islam teaches that he was not and Allah brought him to Heaven. The both however agree with the Virgin Birth which puts Islam in a weird position. Judaism rejects Jesus as the Messiah and believe that the Messiah has not come yet. Christians and Jews basically believe in the same God of the Old Testament. The New Testament expands on the nature of the God of Abraham. There are also contradictory characteristics of the God of the Bible and the God of the Quran. The God of the Bible is Forgiving and the God of the Quran is not. Also Christianity teaches that God is a trinity while Islam forbids belief in the trinity because they teach Allah is only God. There are many more views that you can research for yourself that show that all three major monotheistic religions contradict beliefs.

In the two major Pantheistic religions we get to different views of the universe. While Hinduism does believe in many Gods, Buddhism doesn’t really teach in the existence of God rather that nature just is. Hinduism teaches a caste system and reincarnation beliefs while Buddhism does not. Buddhism teaches that one must reach nirvana while Hinduism does not. Both teach that suffering is illusory so there’s a similarity. These Pantheistic religions have contradictory views that show that both of them can’t be true. Again, either one is right or there both incorrect.

Now what are the contradictory views of these Pantheism and Monotheistic religions. Pantheism teaches that the Universe is God and its divinity is in nature and is an impersonal force. While Monotheism Teaches that God is separated from the Universe since God Created the Universe. His divinity is in the nature of his being and that he is a very personal God. Theists would also say that God’s divinity is displayed through his creation as well. Pantheism teaches that evil is illusory while monotheism teaches that it is very real. Theses to views on reality obviously differ and all can’t be the same.

What’s self-defeating to the postmodernists is the fact that all these religions claim to be the only way to salvation. Jesus said: I am the way, the truth, and the life. Islam teaches to be the absolute truth along with Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and every other religion. The fact that all religions claim to be true shows that postmodernists are being intellectual lazy when it comes to looking up facts about religion. Post modernism itself is just intellectual laziness by just saying we're all right so we don’t have to think about what reality really is. Again if all religions claim to be the only way then they are all either wrong or one is right.

Another point I’d like to address is the fact that Christianity teaches that you can’t earn your way to heaven while all the other major religions teach that you must work your way for salvation. In the Christian view we see that we are sinful, but it shows the love of God by sending his son to die for our mistakes that we can have a relationship with the creator of the cosmos. Christ taught that he has not come to be served, but to serve to show his love for us. We could not earn salvation, so he earned it for us is. This is the basic message of the Christianity to show how that all good God save his lost creatures that he allowed to have freedom of the will. C.S Lewis put I best: there are two types of people in the world those who say to God your will be done and those who say my will be done. Since God has allowed free will we have misused it, but he somehow still forgives and loves us. This is the biggest difference between Christianity and the other main religions in the world.

Is Christianity just Based on Unreasonable Faith, Blind Faith, or Forensic Faith?

9/4/2017

I hear that Christianity is only based on Blind Faith which is believing Christianity  without any evidence. Many will say that it’s Unreasonable Faith based on believing in it even though that it conflicts with evidence that contradicts Christianity. Or is it possible that Christianity is based on a Forensic Faith that is believing or trusting something on the foundation of evidence?

This article is to show within the context of how the Bible describes how Christian’s faith should be practiced. The evidence for Christianity is for a different video and I will demonstrate for why I think it’s the most probably and most realistic worldview.

Christianity is Based on a Forensic Faith which is believing in something on the basis of evidence. It’s the best inference to what the evidence points to being true. Atheists will claim not to have faith, but if they believe in unguided evolution, multiple universes, and so on they will ultimately hold a Forensic Faith(if the evidence actually points to these theories) which is not the case. If you think believing in things without evidence, then you probably aren’t rational.

Now the Question is whether the Bible teaches to base our Faith on evidence or to hold Christianity with a forensic Faith. Let’s see what the Bible has to say about making a defense for Christianity and if we have a Faith based on reason which is Forensic Faith.

1 Thessalonians 5:19-21
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.

1 John 4:1
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Romans 14:5
5 One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind.

2 Timothy 3:14-15
14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Jude 4:10
4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. But these men revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals by these things they are destroyed.

 1 Peter 3:15
but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

2 Corinthians 10:5
We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

Titus 1:9
holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

Jude 1:3 Dear friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

Acts 18:19 They stopped first at the port of Ephesus, where Paul left the others behind. While he was there, he went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews.

Isaiah 1:18
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

Here are several verses showing Paul and Stephen reasoning with unbelievers, and verses talking about to test other Ideas and see if they are truth. Also to call us to show why Christianity is true. The Bible teaches Faith as a forensic type faith and clearly rules out unreasonable Faith.

Is Blind Faith still an option though based on the verses? I think not, but there is a common verse that people will try to point out that Christianity is based on Blind Faith. Both Christians and Atheists will try point this out either showing that Christianity is irrational or that we must believe without evidence which is not the truth at all.

John 20 24-29
24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”

So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, [d] because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

This is when Thomas is doubting and Jesus say’s blessed are those who have not seen, but yet believe.

While at face value this may seem to be promoting blind faith. All it really shows is that Jesus is okay with those who believe in him and have not seen him. It stills shows that Faith is based on evidence because he appeared to Thomas as evidence that he rose from the Dead to show that even Thomas still would not believe even though this was overwhelming evidence. It actually shows not to have unreasonable Faith because Thomas still was believing that Jesus stilled has not been raised from the dead which would be unreasonable faith because Jesus appeared to all 11 of the disciples and we all know that 11 people cannot hallucinate something at the sometime. Plus, the next verse says this to encourage to have a forensic Faith.

John 20:30 30 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

It shows that Jesus did all the miracles (evidence that he is divine) to show why that you should believe in him on the foundation of evidence.

Christianity encourages to believe on the foundation of evidence for why it is true. Not to believe even if there is contradictory evidence or believe without evidence at all. This is why as Christian Case Makers we must show why Christianity is true and to share our Forensic Faith.
